We finished the week off with two sensory activities related to the fields of a farm - both were easy to set up and fun for multiple age groups. Check them out below!
Farm Fields Book
Since we were doing activities related to farm fields today, we read a cute book about all of the things that a tractor does on a farm. The book was called Big Farm Tractor, by Mary Packard.

Next, we rolled out some play-dough to serve as a "field." We ran some toy tractors with various wheel types through the play-dough and felt the pattern they left behind. I made the play-dough myself from common kitchen ingredients using the recipe found here. I did not color the play-dough (as you can see from the picture).
The play-dough itself was a fun sensory experience and feeling the different tracks just enhanced that. My toddler found it fun to squish his feet in the play-dough too!

Farm Field Sensory Bin
Everyone seemed to have a blast with this super easy (though slightly messy) activity. I used a plastic bin and filled it with some foods from the pantry. We had some flax seed meal, white rice, and red lentils. The mixture these created had a very fun feel. The flax seed meal was very earthy and similar to dry dirt or sand. The rice and lentils added color and variety to the texture. I added some small cups, spoons, and a few farm animals.
Kids of multiple ages participated in this activity and all enjoyed it. The older kids were able to easily fill up cups with spoonfuls of the mixture, dump them, and start all over. The younger kids enjoyed just digging around, using their hands to uncover buried objects and attempt to fill up the cups. This was a tad messy - but not a "stain your clothes and bring out the mop" sort of messy...just the "brush off your pants and vacuum it up" kind.
